Hey folks! I'm Callum, and I'm working on a way to practice a new language with an AI powered tutor. I've always found that the hardest part of learning a new language is finding someone to actually converse with. Even if a partner can be found, the pressure can mean that you are more focused on not making mistakes than on actually learning new grammar or vocabulary. The service that I have been working on allows you to practice with a language tutor via online chat messages, or you can have a turn-based voice conversation. I'm working on a number of other features that will be coming out shortly, including a few games for practising pronunciation and listening skills, as well as a plan to release some lesson plans for specific languages later on. Have a try, and let me know if you have any feedback!

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Why is there no major push towards Android for Servers and Desktops?
Ask HN: Why is there no major push towards Android for Servers and Desktops?
15 by eternityforest | 21 comments on Hacker News.
Servers are dominated by Linux. But Linux DevOps is hard work. Any update of anything is liable to break complex applications. Meanwhile, over on Android, we are running dozens of apps of varying quality, all updating all the time, and phones have very high reliability anyway. On Android you don't need all kinds of containerization nonsense with 100MB packages for even the tiniest things. Nor do you get a nightmare of broken dependencies. The OS gives you one consistent API level, and it's consistent on any device. Permissions and security are pretty much solved, or as close solved as they can possibly get right now, you can't stop people from giving location access to everything and still claim people own their devices. On servers, we have a nightmare tangle of Microservices and crap. On Android, we have a really nice design pattern where the OS pretty much provides everything, and stuff you might want to swap out can be done with a service provider app of some type. It's not hard to imagine extending that model to cover things like databases. Why should we have a 50 step process to install every app, when the app can just say "Hey, I need to make a database, I can use postgres or SQLite, put my stuff in whatever provider is configured, and don't ask for a password, I already have the permission."? It's just... so much more sane and structured. There's already lots of Linux userland on Android projects, no real blocking issue there in being able to migrate legacy stuff. There's performance issues with complexity, except.... not really. Apps use things far slower than Dart and Kotlin and Android API calls all the time. And Android is efficient enough to run on a phone at just a few watts, while still rendering modern websites, so it seems like they're doing something right. What gives? Why are we not managing our web apps by uploading a single APK file and a settings.ini with the permissions we want to give it? Why is the Steam Deck Linux based while Android hardly has any decent games?

Ask HN: Why aren't modern programming languages, like Rust, more legible?

This is a question I've often wondered, and am perhaps asking now out of sheer frustration. I have ADHD, of which my particular 'mutation' of ADHD makes it difficult to read and absorb written text. I'm not afraid of programming in general, being a data analyst by trade I often use Python and SQL in my day job. I've trained on Java, and C# (though admittedly with some difficulty) and had dabbled in Delphi (Object Pascal) and Visual Basic as a little girl so the concept of programming isn't new to me. Perhaps the 'low-level-nes' of Rust, a language I would love to learn, is new to me which is perhaps one of the reasons I'm having some trouble understanding it. I'm struggling with heavy implementations of symbols, and perhaps 'shorthand' reserved keywords in languages like Rust, C++ and to some extent JavaScript; I find they aren't as readable as 'higher level' languages like Python. Given that Rust is one of the newer languages on the block, Python is 21 years it's senior, was the syntax of Rust determined by performance factors or because of it's 'low-level-ness'? Are languages like Python and SQL more legible because they're interpreted and compiled into bytecode, rather than just compiled into specific machine code? Or is it purely a decision of the language's developer? This question is focused on Rust specifically, given that's a newer language, perhaps wondering why it didn't adopt some of the design principles of easier to read languages, though I am certainly not singling it out. Are there ADHD friendly tutorials/books on Rust?

First Ever View of the Milky Way Seen Through the Lens of Neutrino Particles
Data collected by an observatory in Antarctica has produced our first view of the Milky Way galaxy through the lens of neutrino particles. It’s the first time we have seen our galaxy “painted” with a particle, rather than in different wavelengths of light. The result, published in Science, provides researchers with a new window on the cosmos.
