New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: What prevents a company from hiring remote employees internationally?

Ask HN: What prevents a company from hiring remote employees internationally?
9 by half0wl | 4 comments on Hacker News.
I've been looking at remote opportunities and realized that a huge portion of companies hiring remotely requires you to be in certain regions (US, EMEA, APAC) — fully international remote is rare. Personally, I'm interested in "remote ok" startups (YC-backed & otherwise) but I'm outside of their specified regions and hesitant to reach out because of that. It's puzzling to me because I've been successful in previous fully international remote roles (& have lots of experience building remote workflows), so I'd like to understand the motivation behind why and identify potential solutions to enabling it, as a thought exercise driven by curiousity. From my perspective, there are a few barriers to this: - Timezone. This is a huge one when it comes to synchronous communications, especially if you're in the driver's seat (as a team lead etc.) Disparate timezones between team members can break a team's velocity if you're not built to be fully asynchronous from the ground-up, which IMO requires a cultural shift in communications (moving towards async comms where meetings are kept to bare minimum and/or only used for social face time). What can we do to make the switch to async comms easier? - No "human" touch. Socializing is critical because humans have an innate desire to connect; nothing can replace real-world connections. This is why off-sites exist for remote companies. They're way easier to arrange when your team isn't spread across continents, and arranging for international off-sites can be cost prohibitive as a startup. I believe there is nothing we can do to replace that human touch (not even the metaverse), so what can we do to make travel planning for companies easier and/or less costly? - Difficult to figure compensation scale. Remote roles typically peg compensations to CoL (Cost of Living). The typical setup I've seen is applying a CoL multiplier to the base comp. for the role and tacking on +/-20% for competitiveness (or as an "error correction"). How can we help them make these decisions easier? - Lack of legal presence. Having no legal entity in the country you're hiring in is a non sequitur, and setting up a legal entity per-country-per-hire is not scalable (beyond setting up the entity itself, you need to be aware of local labour laws, your tax obligations, insurance, etc.) I think Deel (https://www.deel.com/) has already solved this. - Compliance & regulations. The company may be handling sensitive data and/or has PCI/HIPAA compliance obligations. Or it may be a government organization where security/background checks must be performed. Systems/data access may also need to be scrutinized in situation of audits and documented ahead-of-time. Not much we can do here and I think it's a question of risk, so no international remote is probably for the best. I'm sure I'm missing something important. What do you think? (edit: formatting) (edit2: fix typo & re-phrase) (edit3: typo)

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Port of OpenAI's Whisper model in C/C++

Show HN: Port of OpenAI's Whisper model in C/C++
14 by ggerganov | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN, OpenAI recently released a model for automatic speech recognition called Whisper [0]. I decided to reimplement the inference of the model from scratch using C/C++. To achieve this I implemented a minimalistic tensor library in C and ported the high-level architecture of the model in C++. The entire code is less than 8000 lines of code and is contained in just 2 source files without any third-party dependencies. The Github project is here: https://ift.tt/T8ficS4 With this implementation I can very easily build and run the model - “make base.en” . It also allows me to run it on a wide range of devices. For example, I have provided examples of running the model on an iPhone, Raspberry Pi 4 and even in a web page via WebAssembly! The implementation runs fully on the CPU and utilizes FP16, AVX intrinsics on x86 architectures and NEON + Accelerate framework on Apple Silicon. The latter is especially efficient and I observe that the inference is about 2-3 times faster compared to the current PyTorch implementation provided by OpenAI when running it on my MacBook M1 Pro. The WASM port utilizes SIMD 128-bit intrinsics - a feature supported in some modern web browsers [1]. I am very happy with the performance that I observe on Apple Silicon devices. I didn’t expect that the Accelerate framework [2] (i.e. CBLAS) offers such a dramatic performance boost for matrix multiplications so I was very pleasantly surprised! To enable the framework in your C/C++ projects, all you have to do is add `-framework Accelerate` to your clang command-line flags. This entire exercise of implementing the Whisper model was very interesting to me and helped me understand a lot about how the transformer architecture works. I also got a lot of positive feedback from people finding and using my project. We brainstormed on a lot of interesting tools that can potentially be created with this library (such as speech-to-text plugin for Vim, RPi4 voice assistant, WASM chat bot, etc). If interested, checkout the “Examples” section and the “Show and tell” discussions for some ideas! Would love to know what you think about this project and about your experience with using the Accelerate framework in any of your projects. Cheers! I am in a Techno managerial leadership role in my organization. I am facing issue when facing large audience. I am good at giving tech talks to multiple audience. May be initial anxiety will be there while giving tech talks, but once I start, I am really good in making impactful tech talks/presentations. Also general topics, I can talk infornt of my 75 member team. But when it comes to impromptu talks, giving opinions or asking just questions in big forums involving senior leaders / peers or other team members, I generally fumble. My body language doesn't show confidence, try to mince words etc. I step back because i feel i am being judged, or I make wrong statement etc. Any one who has overcome this fear and were able to improve Body language showing confidence amidst many people (esp. when your managers are present). Please let me know if you have any hacks in overcoming this situation. This will take me leaps forward in my career. Thanks for your support, as always.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Getting into AI?

Ask HN: Getting into AI?
22 by juansg | 11 comments on Hacker News.
I'm a software engineer with ~10 years of experience in robotics and in more traditional full stack development. For the past year I've been looking at all the progress happening in ML/AI and each day I'm more convinced that there's a lot of game-changing stuff that will come out of it (what we're seeing with Stable Diffusion and GPT3 are some examples of this). I would love to pivot my career from traditional backend/frontend web development type work towards, but I'm struggling to put a plan in place. - What would be the main topics to learn? - What are potentially relevant companies to apply to? In the past I've been wary of companies throwing AI words around, as in reality many of them were just using some basic ML models and calling it ground breaking AI to hype investors and potential hires.

New top story on Hacker News: ChatGPT produces made-up nonexistent references

ChatGPT produces made-up nonexistent references
6 by msravi | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I was trying to find references to mathematical treatment of lists, and queried ChatGPT the following: Please provide references that deal with the mathematical properties of lists To which ChatGPT responded as follows: "Introduction to the Mathematics of Lists" by Peter J. Cameron (https://ift.tt/1sRgkV9) "List Processing and Programming" by John F. Sowa (https://ift.tt/M7mEXHq) "List Processing in Prolog" by David H. D. Warren (https://ift.tt/AELcotz) "Introduction to the Mathematics of Lists and Trees" by Meinard Müller (https://ift.tt/f37KWyt) "Mathematics of Lists and Trees" by Markus N. Rabe (https://ift.tt/IzpvFhQ) I was pretty surprised and happy, because I hadn't had much success with Google. But it turns out that every single one of those references and links are made up. The references don't exist and the links themselves appear to be cobbled together. The last link for example, takes you to a paper on "Grain mixes for subgrade layers" - the title in the url is irrelevant and only the number matters. Googling for some of those authors throws up author pages with their publications, and it turns out they've never published papers with those titles! See for example, https://ift.tt/qzc8mFT
